Borrowed from Classical Persian بنده (banda). Doublet of ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣਾ (bannhṇā) and ਬਾਨ੍ਹਾ (bānhā). Compare Hindi बंदा (bandā).

Noun sense 1 is probably a back-formation from ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ (rabba dā bandā, pious man, literally servant of God).
