बुरा

Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *बुर (bura, defective), with further etymology unknown. Cognate with Punjabi ਬੁਰਾ (burā, bad), Sindhi بُرو (buro, bad, wicked; noseless), Nepali बुरो (buro, wicked), Odia ବୁରା (burā, bad), Marathi बुरा (burā, bad), Gujarati બૂરું (būrũ, bad). Some of these may be loans from Hindi.

According to Platts, from Sanskrit अवर (avara), and thus a doublet of अवर (avar). However, this is phonologically difficult and thus unlikely; the expected descendant of that term is अबर (abar).
