Etymology
Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰl̥h₃rós with inexplicable initial devoicing, from *bʰleh₃-, and compared with Ancient Greek φύλλον (phúllon), Latin folium, English bloom. However, Mayrhofer considers this derivation outdated (perhaps partially due to the word's post-Vedic attestation), and prefers to link the term to स्फुट् (sphuṭ, “to burst, blossom”) or less likely फल् (phal, “to burst, cleave open”).[1]
