Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *śćad-, related to Prasuni vëzëlë (goatskin boot, shoe) (< *upascāda), with further origin uncertain.[1] Perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *sḱed- (to cover), whence Old English hæteru (clothing).[2] Whether this root is related to Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃- (darkness) (whence compare English shade and shadow), if said root exists, is unclear.
