Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰúȷ́ʰati, from *gʰawȷ́ʰ- (to hide, conceal).[1] The vowel -u- may have been analogically lengthened with reference to the participle गू॒ढ (gūḍhá).[2]

Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬎𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬙𐬀 (guzaēta, 3sg.opt), Old Persian 𐎠𐎱𐎥𐎢𐎭𐎹 (a-p-g-u-d-y /apagaudaya/, to hide away), Parthian 𐫗𐫃𐫇𐫉𐫀𐫅𐫗 (ngwzʾdn, to hide, disappear), Persian آغل (âġol, penfold), as well as perhaps Lithuanian gūžti (to shelter, cower). Note also the Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian ընկոյզ (ənkoyz), պարեգաւտ (paregawt), գդակ (gdak). Pokorny also compares Old Norse gýgr (ogress, giantess),[3] while Kroonen compares Proto-Germanic *gaumaz (heed).
