Etymology

Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰawȷ́ʰ-
Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰúȷ́ʰati
Sanskrit गूहति
Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰúȷ́ʰati, from *gʰawȷ́ʰ- (“to hide, conceal”).[1] The vowel -u- may have been analogically lengthened with reference to the participle गू॒ढ (gūḍhá).[2]
Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬎𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬙𐬀 (guzaēta, 3sg.opt), Old Persian 𐎠𐎱𐎥𐎢𐎭𐎹 (a-p-g-u-d-y /apagaudaya/, “to hide away”), Parthian 𐫗𐫃𐫇𐫉𐫀𐫅𐫗 (ngwzʾdn, “to hide, disappear”), Persian آغل (âġol, “penfold”), as well as perhaps Lithuanian gūžti (“to shelter, cower”). Note also the Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian ընկոյզ (ənkoyz), պարեգաւտ (paregawt), գդակ (gdak). Pokorny also compares Old Norse gýgr (“ogress, giantess”),[3] while Kroonen compares Proto-Germanic *gaumaz (“heed”).
