Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Ketic *suλem (“red”, adjective),[1][2] possibly from earlier *sūˑλwesʌŋ, derived from Proto-Yeniseian *suλ (“blood”) + Proto-Yeniseian *-wes (prosecutive suffix) + Proto-Yeniseian *-ʌŋ (adjectival suffix).

Alternatively, analyzable as derived from Ket сюль (sūlʲ, “blood”).
