Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Ketic *sʌˀn (“dark colored”),[1][2] derived from Proto-Yeniseian *sig (“dark”) + Proto-Yeniseian *-ʌŋ (adjectival suffix).

Alternatively, analyzable as derived from Ket си (sī, “night”).
