Inherited from Middle Russian оболочка (oboločka), from оболочити (oboločiti) +‎ -ка (-ka) or from Proto-Slavic *obvolčьka, from *obvolka +‎ *-ьka, from *obelťi, from *ob- +‎ *velťi. Cognate with Polish obłóczka.

Compare typologically German Bezug (< ziehen << Proto-Germanic *teuhaną < Proto-Indo-European *dewk-), the term also functions as a suffix meaning case or cover, as in Kopfkissenbezug (compare на́волочка (návoločka), Polish powłoczka).
