From жадни (žadni, thirsty; craving) +‎ -їц (-jic). Most likely a calque of Serbo-Croatian жеднети / žedneti, as neither Old Slovak *žiadniť nor Carpathian Rusyn *жаднити (*žadnyty) are attested.
