Verb
οἴομαι • (oíomai)
- to anticipate or to conclude likely with less than complete evidence: to conjecture, to guess or to surmise, in a variety of significations
- to consider certain or highly probable: to expect, to look to, to look for
- Epistle of James, 1.7:
- μὴ γὰρ οἰέσθω ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ὅτι λήψεταί τι παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου.
- mḕ gàr oiésthō ho ánthrōpos ekeînos hóti lḗpsetaí ti parà toû Kuríou.
- Let not that man think he shall receive anything from the Lord.
- μὴ γὰρ οἰέσθω ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ὅτι λήψεταί τι παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου.
- to have a presentiment of something: to forebode, to foretell, to predict, to presage
- to look for a contingency, either optimistically (to hope) or pessimistically (to fear)
- to express full persuasion, either modestly or ironically: to think, to suppose
- Synonym: προσδοκᾰ́ω (prosdokắō)
- (when the event rests with oneself): to have in mind as a goal or motive for action: to aim, to mean, to intend, to purport, to purpose, to propose
- to conceive, to deem, to imagine, to suspect (of an opinion or judgment)
- Synonym: σκέπτομαι (sképtomai)
- to consider certain or highly probable: to expect, to look to, to look for
- (construction)
- (with accusative and infinitive, mostly with future infinitive)
- (with infinitive)
- (sometimes the subject of the infinitive is to be supplied from the context)
- (absolute)
- (impersonal)
- (transitive) to wait for, look for
- (in many cases an infinitive must be supplied from the context)
- (used parenthetically, mostly in the first-person)
- (expressive of modesty or courtesy, to avoid over-great bluntness of assertion)
- (answering a question, expressive of positive certainty) to believe you, of course, no doubt
- (peculiar Attic phrases)
- (as a parenthetic question) πῶς οἴει, πῶς οἴεσθε ― pôs oíei, pôs oíesthe ― how think you?
- οἴομαι δεῖν ― oíomai deîn ― to hold it necessary, think it one's duty (see δέω (déō))
- (as a parenthetic question) πῶς οἴει, πῶς οἴεσθε ― pôs oíei, pôs oíesthe ― how think you?
- (with accusative and infinitive, mostly with future infinitive)
Usage notes
- The active voice is only used with the first-person present active indicative οἴω (oíō) / ὀῑ̈́ω (oī̈́ō), which is used as a parenthetic filler in a similar fashion to "I think" or "I expect" in English. Use in this manner is chiefly restricted to Epic poetry, with occasional use in Attic and Ionic prose.
