εὑρίσκω

See also: ευρίσκω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Inchoative present (with suffix -σκω (-skō)) formed from the aorist εὗρον (heûron). The exact formation of the word's root is unclear, appearing to be a reduplicative of a Proto-Indo-European *wreh₁- (to find). Cognate with Old Irish ·fúair (preterite of fo·gaib (to find)) and Oscan ϝουρουστ (wouroust), as well as possibly Old Church Slavonic обрѣсти (obrěsti, to find), Old Armenian գերեմ (gerem, to capture, take prisoner).[1]
