Maa Kalika Devi Temple[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] also known as Lakhna Kalika Devi Mandir,[10][11] is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kalika (Kali) located in the town of Lakhna in Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple is an important religious and cultural centre for the town and surrounding rural areas, and attracts large numbers of devotees especially during Navratri and other major festivals.
History
Local tradition traces the origins[5] of the temple to several centuries ago and connects its foundation to regional rulers and folk legends of the area. Local reports describe the site as an historic place of worship that has been a focal point for devotion and communal gatherings since the medieval period. Several news accounts note the temple's long-standing role in the social life of Lakhna.[12]
Religious significance
The temple is dedicated to the fierce form of the goddess, Kalika[4], who is worshipped as a protective and power-bestowing deity. Devotees come to offer vows (mannat), bells, and other offerings in hope of blessings and fulfilment of wishes. Navratri (both Chaitra and Sharad) are observed with large-scale rituals, special aartis and increased pilgrimage.
Communal harmony
Local media highlight that the Maa Kalika Devi Temple and its precincts are notable for communal harmony: the temple complex includes, or is adjacent to, a dargah (the mazar of Saiyyad Baba)[3][4][6] and both Hindu[8] and Muslim[8] traditions are observed by visitors at the site, making it a symbol of syncretic practice in the region.
Architecture and layout
The temple complex reflects regional North Indian temple styles with a sanctum (garbhagriha) housing the image of the goddess, a shikhara above the main shrine, and a courtyard for congregational worship. The precinct includes facilities for devotees such as pathways for circumambulation and temporary arrangements for festivals.
Festivals and events
The temple becomes a major pilgrimage site during Navratri when devotees from Etawah[12] and neighbouring districts gather in large numbers. Local authorities and the temple committee undertake preparations for crowd management, lighting, and security during these periods. Diwali and the month of Shravan are also important occasions at the temple.
