Kalibaah Mandir[1][2][3][4][5] (Sanskrit: कालिबाहु मन्दिरम्; transliterated as Kālibāhu Mandiram), also known locally as Kali Vahan[6], Kali Baah, or Kali Bahan Temple, is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, located in the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple is situated near the banks of the Yamuna River and serves as an important centre of Shakta worship in the region. It is locally revered for its association with Shakti traditions and for legends connected to the Mahabharata[2][6], which form an integral part of the site’s devotional and cultural identity.

Location

Kaalibaah Mandir[2] is situated near the banks of the Yamuna River on EtawahGwalior Road, in Etawah Sadar Tehsil, Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple’s geographical coordinates are 26°45′12″N latitude and 79°00′14″E[7] longitude.

Etymology

The name Kali Vahan is derived from local pronunciation and oral tradition. Another prevalent name, Kali Baah ("Arm of Kali"), is linked to the belief that a limb of Goddess Sati fell at this site. Over time, variations such as Kali Bahan have emerged through dialectal usage.

Mythology and religious significance

Association with Sati

According to regional belief rooted in Shakta mythology, the arm (baah) of Goddess Sati fell at this location[8] when Lord Shiva carried her body after her self-immolation. Because of this belief, the temple is considered a local Shakti Peetha, though it is not listed among the classical pan-Indian Shakti Pithas. The belief plays a central role in the temple’s religious identity and devotional practices.

Ashwatthama tradition

One of the most distinctive legends associated with the temple states that Ashwatthama[9], the immortal son of Guru Dronacharya from the Mahabharata[6], worships[9][6] Goddess Kali at this temple. Local priests and devotees believe that Ashwatthama performs the first worship of the day in an unseen form, and it is often claimed that flowers are found before the deity in the early morning even before the sanctum is formally opened.

History

While the present temple structure dates mainly to the late 19th or early 20th century, local traditions suggest that the site has been a center of Goddess worship since ancient times[2][6]. Stone idols and sculptural fragments preserved within the sanctum are popularly believed to belong to the medieval period. The temple has undergone multiple renovations while retaining its original spiritual significance.

Architecture

The temple follows traditional North Indian Hindu architectural styles. The sanctum houses three primary idols identified by devotees as Mahakali[3], Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. Some older stone carvings and idols are preserved within the inner sanctum and surrounding areas, indicating earlier phases of construction.

Access

The temple is accessible by road from Etawah city and lies close to the Etawah–Gwalior route[2]. It is visited throughout the year, with peak footfall during Navratri.
