Uncertain. Most likely from Vulgar Latin *traucem, from Latin trāducem, accusative of trādux ('vine branch'). Alternatively, from Latin thyrsus, from Ancient Greek θύρσος (thúrsos). Cognates include Aragonese troz, Spanish trozo and probably Italian tozzo.
