From Middle Irish tres, from Old Irish tris.[1] Cognate with Scottish Gaelic treas and Manx trass.

Usage notes
Like all ordinal numbers, treas precedes the noun it modifies. The noun may be in the nominative case even where the genitive would normally be expected:
- i gceann an lae ― at the end of the day vs. i gceann an treas lá ― at the end of the third day
- tar éis an chláir ― after the programme vs. tar éis an treas clár ― after the third programme
