English

Etymology

From squaw +‎ fish. It has been suggested that squawfish could be a corruption of *squawkfish (in reference to the sound the fish makes when taken out of the water), but that form is unattested, and compare oldsquaw ducks which were named because their squawking was likened to Native American women's.

Noun

squawfish (plural squawfishes or squawfish)

  1. (now offensive) The pikeminnow.
