salpare
Italian
Etymology
Etymology tree
Inherited from Old Italian sarpare, of uncertain further origin.[1] Babiniotis considers the term to be from an earlier Vulgar Latin *ex-harpāre, which would be borrowed from Ancient Greek ἐξαρπάζω (exarpázō, “to snatch away from, tear out”), with sense development "to tear off" > "to drag quickly" > "to weigh anchor".[2] Other theories derive the Old Italian from serpe (“snake”), itself from Latin serpēns, though the sense development under this theory is unclear.
