Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *pua-hiohio (compare with Tahitian puahiohio and Rarotongan puaʻioʻio) related to Proto-Polynesian *aa-hiohio (compare with Māori āwhiowhio “whirlwind, tornado, whirlpool”, Samoan āsiosio “tornado, whirlwind” and Tongan ʻahiohio) from Proto-Oceanic *siosio “whirlwind”.[1]
