From Proto-Polynesian *aa-hiohio (compare with Samoan āsiosio “tornado, whirlwind” and Tongan ʻahiohio as well as Hawaiian puahiohio, Tahitian puahiohio and Rarotongan puaʻioʻio) from Proto-Oceanic *siosio “whirlwind”.[1]
