A Slavic borrowing which displaced the inherited (now uncommon) term por / pur. Praz is derived from either Old Church Slavonic празъ (prazŭ), Bulgarian праз (praz) or possibly directly from late Byzantine Greek πράσον (práson), also Aromanian prash); compare also phonetic development of s > z in ovăz). Unlikely from a Vulgar Latin *prasum, (from Ancient Greek) due to the presence of the inherited term.
