Etymology

Rebracketing of oppå/opp and under. See also , , tu (ut + ur), pivi ( + over), ti (ut + i), which all share the same word genesis pattern. Compare dialectal Swedish punne.

First attested in 1770 as punni in Børre Henrich Rachløw’s glossary of Trøndersk dialect. A transitional form is attested in 1698 by Jacob Laugesen Bork spelled as op-unn, where the author mixes different northern dialects.
