ontstaan
Dutch
Etymology
From Middle Dutch ontstaen, from Old Dutch antstān. By surface analysis, ont- + staan from the inchoative use of the prefix. The obsolete sense "to elude" of ontstaan does not however derive from the inchoative use of that prefix but rather from the use indicating separation, which is etymologically distinct from the former. Cognate with German entstehen and Dutch Low Saxon untstån.
