Usage notes

Mixing up odată and o dată (both translatable as “once” or “one time”) is a common error. O dată with a space is an adverb of frequency describing the number of occurrences (“a single time”): s-a întâmplat o dată (“it happened a single time”), o dată pe an (“once a year”). A simple test to determine which of the two is intended is to check if the addition of doar (“only”) to yield doar o dată (“only once”) makes sense.

Adverb sense 4 takes strong sentence stress and an initial position.
