Inherited from Proto-Bantu [Term?]. By surface analysis, m- +‎ -amba (“to say”) +‎ -o. The initial *g of Proto-Bantu *-gàmba was lost in Proto-Sabaki *-amba, but not in the derived noun *mugambo.
