Etymology

From Proto-Bantu *-gàmba.

This is one of a few lexical items where Proto-Bantu *g is lost in all Sabaki languages, suggesting it was already lost before Proto-Sabaki broke up.[1] This *g resurfaces in many of the derived terms.
