Etymology

Uncertain, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰórtos (“enclosure”), which would be cognate to Latin hortus (“garden”), Proto-Celtic *gortos (“enclosure, field”), and Ancient Greek χόρτος (khórtos, “farmyard”). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰerdʰ- (“enclosure, to enclose”), which would be cognate to English yard, garden, Proto-Slavic *gordъ (“fortification, castle”), etc. Both are ultimately from *ǵʰer- (“to enclose”), in any case.
