Etymology 1
From a confluence of:
- Middle Low German kāte, kōte (“hut”), from Proto-Germanic *kutǭ ~ *kutą; compare German Kate.
- A derivative of Proto-Samic *koatē, from Proto-Uralic *kota; compare Southern Sami gåetie.
Whether and how the two terms may be ultimately interrelated is a debated question. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk kote.
