jetë
Albanian
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈjetə/
- Rhymes: -etə
Etymology 1
An early deverbal formation from jes, jet- (“to remain, exist”) + -ë.
Traditionally made to derive from Latin aetās (“lifespan”), comparing it to Aromanian etã (“age, life”) which was assumed to be an inheritance thereof. This however does not take into consideration the unusual borrowing from the nominative case rather than its accusative aetātem (compare pushtet, qytet, i vërtetë, etc.) and the Aromanian term's lack of expected diaphthongisation of e-. It is rather the case that the Albanian word is of native origin and the Aromanian one was borrowed from it.
