Related to, and perhaps borrowed from, Albanian jetë, see which for more.

Unlikely to be inherited from Latin aetās, which would be expected to yield a diphthongized *eatã (cf. eadirã, earbã, eascã). An inheritance of the Latin nominative would also be somewhat unusual for an inanimate noun.
