Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit ايغَرْمْ (iɣarm, “?”), from Proto-Berber *a-ɣrəm (“fortified place”)[1]. Synchronically from ɣrm (“to build a wall using stones”).
Cognate with Awjila aɣàrəm (“castle, police post”), Tuareg aɣrǝm (“fortified town, village, fortress”), Northern Saharan Berber aɣerem (“town, city”), Tetserret aṛəm (“town”), and Zenaga iʔrmi (“village”). Unrelated to Hebrew קֶרֶת (qeret, “city”), and its cognates.
