Inherited from Old Swedish hult, from Old Norse holt (wood), from Proto-Germanic *hultą (wood), possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₂- (to beat, break). Cognate with English holt and German Holz. First attested in 1210–1216[1].[2]
