Usage notes
- The first and third person singular forms in the preterite tense of the indicative mood of this verb varied in their vowel lengths. Forms with a short vowel (aȥ) and forms with a long vowel (āȥ) both occur. The variant with the long vowel existed already in the Proto-Germanic era, which is unlike the other verbs of this class. See *etaną and *ēt.
