Etymology
Inherited from Old Spanish embaraçar, borrowed from Old Galician-Portuguese embaraçar (literally “to tangle, to snarl”), from earlier baraço (“twine, tether, noose”), from Arabic مَرَسَة (marasa, “rope”). See Portuguese baraço for more. The source of French embarrasser, whence English embarrass.
