Etymology 1

From Old Irish dlúth,[3][4] from Proto-Celtic *dlūtis (compare Welsh dylif for Proto-Celtic *dlū-mi-), of uncertain ultimate origin. MacBain mentions a speculative comparison to Ancient Greek θλάω (thláō, “to bruise”),[5] which would imply a Proto-Indo-European root *dʰleh₂w-, *dʰlewh₂- or similar.
