Etymology

chʼí- (out horizontally) + -ni- (thematic) + -◌́- (ni-modal 3rd person subject prefix) + -ł- (classifier)-yé (momentaneous stem of root -YĄ́, “to grow”). In this root, the ł- classifier and initial /j/ merge to form /s/.
