From Old Norse bófi (“boy”), from Proto-Germanic *bōbô, from *bō- (“close [male] relation”). Cognate with Dutch boef (“mischievous boy, rascal; also thief”), Middle Low German bôve, German Bube (“boy, rascal, knave, rogue”), dialectal Swedish babbe (“little boy”) and English bub.
