From Latin arte (by skill, ablative of ars (art)) +‎ Latin factum (thing made, from facio (to make, do")). Equivalent to a possible Proto-Romance or Vulgar Latin *artefactum (compare Portuguese artefato, Spanish artefacto); see also artifex (artist).
