From Gheg archaic anzë (definite anza), enlarged with suffix -ëz, from Proto-Albanian *aunā, from Proto-Indo-European *Heu- (“to weave”) (compare Dutch gewaad (“clothing”), Lithuanian austi (“to weave”)). For sense development, compare Proto-Indo-European *wobʰseh₂ (“wasp”) (cf. English wasp), from *webʰ- (“to weave”) (cf. English web).
