air line (plural air lines)

  1. A pipe or tube supplying air or compressed air.
    • 1958 October, “New Motive Power Depot at Thornaby, N.E.R.”, in Railway Magazine, page 675:
      Air-lines from the reservoirs to supply points are 2-in. bore heavy gauge polythene pipes which are carried underground, embedded in sand.
  2. (rail transport) A railroad following a very flat, straight route between two endpoints in order to minimize travel times, choosing the shortest, most direct route practical even if longer route that was more advantageous was available.
