From older Finnish akkia or older Sami akio, akje (compare Karelian ahkivo), from a Proto-Uralic *aškɜ, or Proto-Norse *ᚨᚲᛃᛟ (*akjō), corresponding to Swedish äcka, Icelandic ekja (driving, fording), to the root ak (Swedish åk), “drive, ford, ride”.
