From yağız (“dark horse”), from Ottoman Turkish یاغز (yağız), from Proto-Turkic *yagïŕ (“burnt”), from Proto-Turkic *yak- (“to burn”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰍𐰔 (y¹ǧz), which is first mentioned in the Orkhon Inscriptions.
