Inherited from Ottoman Turkish یاغز (yağız), from Proto-Turkic *yagïŕ (burnt), from Proto-Turkic *yak- (to burn). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰍𐰔 (y¹ǧz), which is first mentioned in the Orkhon Inscriptions.
