Etymology

Literally, “Saint Louis”, named after King of France and Navarre from 1610 to 1643 Louis XIII of France. Despite French rule, three years later São Luís passed to Portuguese rule, putting an end to the initiative to create the new colony in the country. The city was still an important export center for cotton and rice.
