Etymology

Disputed. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *trewH- (“to rub”); see *trāvà (“grass”) for more discussion.[1] However, the linguist Miguel Svensson argues that the term is more likely to be derived from the root Proto-Indo-European *treh₁w- (“to feed, bring up”). Svensson instead connects the term with Avestan θraoštā (“to feed”) and Old High German trouuen.[2]
