From *pьràti (“to beat, to hit”) +‎ *-ũnъ (“-er”). False cognate of Lithuanian Perkūnas, Latvian Pērkons, Sudovian Pjarkus, Old Norse Fjǫrgyn, Sanskrit पर्जन्य (parjanya), Albanian Perëndi.
