Etymology

The earlier of two variant forms, with *rǫ- developing later. This older form is preserved in widely separated Siouan languages and also found in Catawba.

Reconstruction notes

Rankin (1988) argues that *nǫ- likely predates the alternative form *rǫ- based on its wider distribution among linguistically and geographically distant subgroups. Supporting evidence comes from Catawban, where the form appears as Catawba nepe (“one”).[1]
