From Proto-Afroasiatic *gad- (“young male bovid”). Cognate with Proto-Cushitic *gad- and Proto-Chadic *gad-.
Unrelated to Proto-Berber *e-ɣăyd, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ḳid-/*ḳayd- (whence Proto-Semitic *naḳad- and Proto-Omotic *ḳid-).

the endings -m and -na are dropped in the bound form, which may also undergo syncopation of an unstressed final vowel where possible. Note: the ending -V before the possessive endings responds to case: *gadyuya for nom. case, *gadyiya for gen. case, *gadyaya for acc. case, etc.
