From earlier *a-qăyd, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ḳid-/*ḳayd- (“young goat, sheep”).[1] Cognate with Proto-Semitic *naḳad- (“weak sheep, shepherd”) (Akkadian 𒈾𒆤 (nāqidum)) and Proto-Omotic *ḳid-.
