Unknown, possibly from Proto-Scythian *hafri (“deep”), from Proto-Iranian *gafráh, *ǰafráh (“deep”) with regressive fricative assimilation, compare хӕфс (xæfs, “frog”), from Proto-Iranian *kacyápah, rather than the expected **kæfs.
