Proto-Indo-Iranian

Etymology

Possibly from a Proto-Indo-European *h₁ónḱos (piece, mass), which may be a Schwebeablaut derivative of *h₁neḱ- (to carry, take away) or *h₂neḱ- (to reach) (though such a Schwebeablaut would be rather strange). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὄγκος (ónkos, mass).[1]
